Director Hur Jin-ho's "Dangerous Liaisons" has perched atop China's Box Office and became the first No. 1 film to be helmed by a Korean director in the country. "Dangerous Liaisons," the Chinese-language film adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclo's classic French novel, topped the chart last Thursday, the day of its release.

The pic's promoter said through a press release Friday that it had dominated 20 percent of the movies screened that day, adding the hit film is also the first chart-topping movie that stars a Korean actor or an actress as the lead character. Set in Shanghai's 1930s, "Dangerous Liaisons" shows what the upper class society was like in China.

Building more buzz before opening in local theaters, the film has also been picked up for U.S. distribution by Well Go USA and a combined number of over 1,000 seats to three screenings of the movie at the 17th Busan International Film Festival, opening next Thursday, have sold out in no time.

Hur's version of this oft-told tale was talk of the town already after being invited to the 65th Festival De Cannes and the 37th Toronto International Film Festival. To respond to fans' overwhelming response to the movie, Jang and Zhang are scheduled to strut the red carpet at the BIFF.
